Simplify your Fashion

For the last couple years of my life, I've been on a mission to simplify.  I have five children and a husband.  We accumulate things exponentially.  There were days when I would walk through my door and feel instantly suffocated.  Clutter is life sucking, uncomfortable, and deters the visibility of what is beautiful.  It can also give an impression of a lack of focus.  And so it is in fashion.
Have you ever seen someone wearing so much stuff that it looked as if they were wearing their entire wardrobe?  Or how about persons wearing multiple chains, necklaces, rings, bracelets etc.  It almost like they are fearful of loss or leaving anything behind so they wear it all at once.  Make up is the same way.  Some one wearing too much makeup often gets a stigma we associate with drag-queens.  I believe that too much of the same thing is overkill.
Fashion is not about how much we can pile on but what we do with what we have.  Better yet, it's like a puzzle in that we try to find the pieces that fit together.  These articles of clothing and accessories don't just have to fit with each other, but also with our body type, skin tone, and hair style.  So overdoing it in one area can pull the focus from the very element that you want to shine the most.
       Try this concept:
                            1) start with a basic plain dress/shirt  (i.e.cream/off white)
                            2) couple it with a contrasting color of stocking/legging/pant (i.e.grey/blue)
                            3) Find a colored belt for the wow factor and pair it with a hair flower,  hat, necklace, or
scarf in the same color (i.e. yellow/pink/red)
                            4) Make sure your shoes don't take away from the wow factor.
(in some cases, shoes can BE the wow factor. )
                            5) Don't forget the power of a SMILE.  A smile not only brightens your eyes, but it lifts
your over- all demeanor.  And best of all, IT'S FREE!

Obviously there are no set rules to fashion.  But if you find yourself in a fashion rut, start here.  One more thing, ALWAYS DRESS COMFORTABLE.  There is nothing more disturbing than a person who is constantly pulling and tugging on their clothing, making adjustments, and fidgeting.  If it doesn't fit, It doesn't fit.
Simple things are beautiful

Are you dressed in Shame?

A couple days ago, my 9 year old daughter asked me "Mom, how come so many people want to change who they are?   I answered her from my own experience. "Because somebody along the way told them that they were not okay.  That who they are, wasn't enough."  Hearing that question come from such an innocent, concerned heart made me pause for a moment with the realization that most of the world feels this way.
I bring this up because, later on that day, when I was on my way to a meeting, I experienced this overwhelming sense of acceptance and love.  I felt this inner peace with who I am as a person inside and out.  It's the first time I can recall not feeling shame over anything.  I felt beautiful for the first time before God himself, who sees me in my naked form.  And I knew I was loved just the way I am.........completely.  I used to be self abusive and demean myself and say that if people ever saw me naked, they wouldn't think I was beautiful anymore.  But this was the day, the first time ever, I felt naked and unashamed.  No, I wasn't driving around in my birthday suit, but I felt as if the God of the universe was looking straight at me, seeing all that I am, and all that I'm not, and truly accepting me in bare form.
It reminded me of the age old story of Adam and Eve naked and unashamed in the garden.  It was shame that prompted the necessity for clothing.  In shame, we try to cover ourselves.  We try to hide.  I know so many people who dress as if they're hiding from the world.  Some people wear baggy clothing so that their form is hidden or dress in other gender clothing because they're not comfortable with who they are.     In our highly sexualized world, some women are ashamed of their femininity, so they hide in ugly, unattractive clothing.  In the same manner, some women feel ashamed of who they are so they dress in super sexy clothing to gain the approval and affirmation that they need.  Some people have been abused, so they use clothing as a shield from further abuse.  Some men feel insecure about their masculinity, so they dress to boost up what they feel they lack.  i.e.  perhaps the wearing of multiple gold chains around the neck somehow increases that persons value, or the wearing of an Armani suit makes them appear more prestigious, when in fact their value doesn't come from outward appearances.
I guess what I'm getting at is this, "How would we dress if we were not ashamed of who we are......or what we've done?"  I'm not promoting any certain style or any amount of coverage.  Every case is different.  I do know this, that when we eliminate shame as part of our wardrobe criteria we would have more freedom in our personal fashion.  i.e.  When I was growing up I never wore shorts or even skirts above the knee because I thought my legs were too skinny until one summer in high school when it was too hot to care any more. No more long jeans in the summer time.  I threw shame out the window for my own health and well being.   Evaluate yourself. Do you dress yourself in shame?

Like this tree, we can be naked, beautiful, and unashamed

A Byer Too Steal!

Yesterday, I had an important meeting to attend and I knew that I wanted to look professional.  However, most of what I own is fashionable, yes, but not necessarily for the professional world.  I had very little time to prepare so I scanned my mind for every possible option and decided that I was going to have to buy a new suit jacket.  In my mind, I wanted grey.  I've never really, shopped for a suit jacket for myself, even though I already had a few.  In fact, I had in my possession a DKNY pinstripe suit coat that I love but because of weight loss, can't quite fit right anymore.  So, In my mind, I needed something grey and long.
I went to one of my favorite stores with only twenty minutes to shop before closing time and an hour and 1/2 before my meeting and I began the hurried pursuit of my long grey suit jacket.  In this store, there is no guarantee that you're going to find anything remotely close to what you're looking for, but I've never been disappointed and that keeps me going back again and again.  I had gathered in my arms, no less than ten suits and dashed to the changing room.  Immediately, I heard over the intercom, "5 minutes left to shop and the store will be closing".   Awwwwww!! Anxiety kicked in.  I have never changed through clothes so quickly.  Out of all that I had gathered in my arms from colors of brown, blue, and grey, only 3 of them fit with enough length in arms and body.  And one of them, I was completely satisfied with.  It is a BYER TOO! suit jacket, Long, Grey, and the best part...................... drum roll please, 6.50$ after all discounts were applied. Woot Woot.  I'm lovin it!   At home I coupled it with a beautiful red dress I had purchased for just 1.00$ over a year ago and had  never worn before.  What's even more awesome, is that I happened to see the Brand tag for the dress, and it was was a BYER TOO! as well.
I went to this meeting feeling both confident in heart, soul, and fashion and got many compliments both before and after.  Check it out.  See photos below.

6.50$ BYER TOO! suit jacket, 1.00$ BYER TOO! red dress
10.00$ genuine leather black heels

Dress from Within

Deep down inside, every woman is a princess and every man is a hero.  Even if her crown and precious jewels have been misplaced or his shining sword and shield is dingy and dented.   In our society we spend mega millions to fix ourselves up on the outside.  It's almost as if we know there is something brilliant and captivating inside, waiting to be released from a cage of routine and mundane life.  But because we are afraid of ourselves and others, we keep the truth hidden and play dress-up for the world.
This is why fashion is so relevant to our culture.  With it, we speak volumes without using words.  The problem is, that most often, we're telling lies.  This is why we can encounter a drop-dead-gorgeous woman and be turned off by her attitude.  And in the same way encounter a woman that might not ever be on a magazine cover and yet radiates beauty.  Just the same is a man in a tailored suit and tie, fresh from the Barber, and yet possesses a shadow of selfishness and greed, while a man in basic blue jeans and white t-shirt can be an image of honor and valor.  The true secret to beauty is the condition of the soul.  So why not Dress from Within?
What do I mean?  Take a moment and reflect on what your soul would look like to others if it were visible.  Would people see breaks, cracks, war, rags and ashes?  Or would they see, wholeness, vibrancy, peace, life, love and laughter?  It matters little what you look like on the outside if the presence that you bring is a mix-match.

So F.Y.I. before you get dressed in the morning.......
                                      1)  Take time to be at peace with yourself  (process your emotions)
                                      2)  Put yourself (health and well being) on your priority list
                                      3)  Let go of prior offense (they tend to crowd the heart and weigh you down)
A person carrying offense often bows the shoulders and lacks good posture.
An easy way to remember this is STOP--DROP--and ROLL.
Stop what you're doing when aggravation arises.  Chose to drop the negative
feelings.  And let the offense roll away and not haunt you.
                                      4)  Refresh your mind with good thoughts by keeping a journal of noteworthy
                                             happenings both great and small.
                                      5)  Believe that you are a gift to our world

Savings that Save

Recently, I heard some very startling statistics about world hunger and the needless deaths that occur in the  thousandths every 8-12 seconds.  It was all very disheartening and I began to ask my self if I was wasting my time by blogging about fashion and instead should be using my time to raise money for these families in need.  But then I realized the importance of what I'm doing.
I live in a culture that buys food, clothing, automobiles and multiple forms of communication and entertainment.  It's who we are.  I can not change who we are.  But what I can do is show people a better way to shop.  I have learned how to get brand name items for pennies on the dollar or high quality items for less, simply because they don't have the expensive logo that you're really paying for.  See it's not about being cheap, it's about being smart.  Saving money on the things that we love is a no-brainer.
For example, Yesterday, I knew that something special was waiting for me to find it.  I got up in the morning with a little extra time before going to work, and went shopping in one of my favorite stores.  All I wanted to spend was 4.00$.  So with twenty minutes and four dollars in tow, I walked in and began browsing. I went through several racks but nothing sparked my eye.  I was almost out of time, and almost gave up when something beautiful caught my eye.  It was a DKNY shirt!  Gorgeous, Gorgeous!  And the best part about it was the price, 3.99$  A smile spread across my face that wouldn't go away for the next two hours.
But I wondered how much this shirt would've normally cost me.  So I went online to research and came to an immediate conclusion that this shirt wouldn't have been less than 50.00$ without a sale.  I had struck gold.   A normal person, perhaps with a few less responsibilities than I, would go shopping with a couple hundred dollars in hand and have no problem paying fifty dollars or more for brand name clothing.  My mission is to encourage people to shop smart so they have more money in their pockets at the end of the day and they can then, invest it in something else and/or donate a portion of it to a worthy cause, such as World Vision.  Your savings could save a life.

F.Y.I.        1)  set aside a portion of money for clothing (cash if possible, credit cards are a trap)
                 2)  do your research to find great sales/coupons
                 3)  have in mind what you want/need
                 4)  Stick to the plan so you don't end up with a closet full of regrets
                 5)  Take your savings and invest/donate it

Little Things Big Impact

It's the little things in life that make a huge difference.  Just think, what would the statue of Liberty be without her torch, the American flag with a few missing stars, the Eiffel tower without its point, George Washington without his sword? These are all things, that if slightly modified in its minute detail,  would lose some of its power or presence.  Yes, the main image would still all be there but somehow, it loses the captivating element that draws our eyes to gaze longer.
In that same way is a woman without the sparkle around her neck or dangling from her ears, or gracing her delicate hand.  Sometimes it's a belt, bracelet, or watch, and on occasion, a hat.  When I get dressed, I look in the mirror and think "what would make this outfit POP?" In other words, what would give it the wow factor?  What would make this memorable?
If when you get dressed you don't feel "wow", most likely, others won't either.  There are exceptions to the rule.  Some people are just really hard on themselves.  But generally speaking, if you are pleased with your image, chances are, others will be too.  Now, there are those few that absolutely show no interest in the way they look, but I'm not referring to those people.  Ironically so, they are making a statement of their own that creates another type of wow.  Like wow, you walked out the house like that?!!!
Okay, back to the subject.  Little things matter when it comes to fashion. What would Cinderella have been without her glass slippers?  And what about a man without his tie in a political convention or perhaps with a missing cuff link, or better yet, Mr. T without his gold chains?  He would still have his Mohawk and muscles but somehow, I believe, he would have faded from our memories long ago without his chains. (Yes, they were far from little)  How about Indiana Jones without his f`edora?  Accessories give you a chance to make your mark or to simply make a statement.  And last, but not least, they're fun!  I have transformed whole outfits based on accessories.  These are some of my favorite new items.

One Dollar Fab find --1

Tuesdays are a great day for me.  It's my day to invest in myself, my dreams, and aspirations.  I guess you could say, it's the day I reward myself for all the hard work I do the rest of the week, and for years past of complete neglect of myself in the servitude of others.  And I don't mean as a hired hand, I mean as a wife, mother, employee, and volunteer, my life was poured out to the wonderful people around me.  And sometimes to those that weren't so wonderful.
And part of my tuesday, me day, is to every-once-in-awhile go to the dollar day at the Salvation army store.  Now typically, I don't like to take more than 10.00$ to go shopping there because that goes a long way and I don't like to shop longer than 2 hours.  My shopping limit is usually capped at two hours, then it's time for a snack break.  Shopping can be very exhausting!
So today I'm sharing with you one of my one dollar fab finds and I hope it encourages you that you can fyi4Less.

A Fashionable way to Live

It's no secret that Americans live in a fast moving society.  We like everything on the go.  And we have devices to help us to do more on the go.  Since the invention of the light bulb our days have been made longer because we no longer have the constraints of the setting sun.  Though our bodies seem to adjust,  for some, the fast pace has also sped up the aging process.  Thanks to make up, we can cover up those dark circles and facial wrinkles that give away our level of fatigue and neglect of a normal rest cycle.  Even plastic surgery can alter the aging process, giving people a hot body with an old pair of eyes.  The eyes don't lie.  But I believe the fountain of youth is partially hidden in the age-old concept of Beauty sleep.
When we sleep our body naturally heals itself. It's healthy for our physical bodies, emotions, and it promotes longevity.  I've also read that lack of sleep is linked to serious medical conditions, diseases, and early mortality.   It can cause memory loss, high blood pressure, inflammation and even weight problems.  I don't care how well dressed you are, if you are a frazzled mess of a human being, with mood swings and a heart attack waiting to happen, you're not going to be very attractive.
And I'm sure I'm not alone in my distaste of wrinkles.  I don't like them on my clothes and I don't like them on my face.  When I get a full nights rest I wake up glowing.  My eyes sparkle, and everything is in its right place.  When I lack sleep, it seems like every thing is dragging just like that song "do your ears hang low".   There are days when my eyes, ears, shoulders and everything in between is hanging low.  And in the words of a dear friend of mine, I was  "draggin booty".  I look in the mirror and I look old and feel old and then start to act old.  But with a good rest or even a mid day nap, I'm like an energetic bunny.  You see, clothing only enhances the person within them.  If you're walking around like a zombie, you'll just be a well dressed zombie.  So  next time you're making out your schedule, make room for Beauty sleep.

F.Y.I.  it pays to take a rest.
                                                           1)  improved memory
                                                           2)  healthy emotions
                                                           3)  physical wellness
                                                           4)  longevity

AND THAT'S A FASHIONABLE WAY TO LIVE

The price of inspiration

Who isn't inspired by nature and all it's intricate beauty, or the mass universe and it's endless wonder?  Inspiration is all around us.  I find my greatest clues for fashion combinations in the natural displays around me like the green leaves of a tree as a crown atop a deep brown bodice or the blue of the ocean against a brown rocky shore or light tan sands.
I am constantly in awe of the beauty around me. But, not everyone carries my sentiment. For beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  This Saturday, however, something other than nature caught my eye.  It was the sheer beauty of a couple fashion scarves adorning a door in one of my favorite super discount stores.  When I saw these scarves, I immediately had an image in mind of what to wear with them.  Though nature gives us inspiration for free, the price of this inspiration was just 2.99$.
I couldn't wait to put it all together.  Previously that day I had been in another store looking at fashion scarves and the price was a bit out of my range, almost 30.00$.  I can honestly say that I feel just as fashionable in my 2.99$ scarves.
So to those who can pay more, pay more, if you wish, and don't feel bad about it.  And to those who should pay less, pay less and don't feel bad about it.  Remember you can Fab Your Image 4 Less, and do it guilt free.

F.Y.I. , this is how I utilized those 2.99$ scarves  (see images below)

The Tie that Binds

Okay, so maybe I'm a little weird, but I love to wear ties.  I especially collect paisley ties.  Ties can add both character and class to an outfit.  But why is it often the last item that is picked out?  I find that if I see my ties hanging before me, I get inspiration for my next outfit nearly effortlessly.  After all, a tie shows you all the colors that you can include for your shirt, pants or other bottoms, over coat, suit, vest, and, even your shoes.
I've also noticed that colors that I would have never thought to put together are some how automatically okay when you have a tie that binds it all together.  Trust me, I've seen some odd combinations thrown together out there.  Most times I just attribute it to obvious colorblindness, ignorance, or unfortunately the "I-don't-cares".  But ties can be almost magical in it's instant unifying qualities.
Having that all in mind will cut down your shopping time because you have now eliminated unnecessary options and can now focus on a select few.  Ask yourself which one of your color options would work best as a top/bottom/accent or accessory color? Envision the end product but save room for adjustments.
As a female, when I wear a tie, it makes me feel "out-of-the-box".  It's just another way for me to express my individuality and creativity.  I even love wearing a tie when I don't have a collar to tuck it under.  To me, it becomes like a fancy necklace to adorn my neck with, also making the most subtle attire stand out with pride.  I find these ties for only 1 dollar at the salvation army.  I've noticed that most people don't mangle their ties and I feel no shame in wearing them.  They don't carry that pre-worn look so nobody's going to know.  The only down fall is picking through the ancient, out-dated ones to find the one that sparks your eye.  I also recently had the experience of shopping at men's warehouse with a client of mine and it was tie heaven.  I saw there a tie that I had only dreamed about and it will ,one day, adorn my neck.

        So F.Y.I next time you go shopping;
                                                     1) Consider the tie first
                                                     2) note all your color options to cut down time
                                                     3) envision the end product
                                                     4) Don't be afraid to step out of the box

Scarf it up!

Okay Ladies and Gentlemen, this blog isn't about eating to your hearts content, it's about something way more fashionable than glutteny.   FASHION SCARVES.
As some of you know, I recently had a shoe shopping trip.  I got three pairs of shoes that don't have any fancy bling or design to them but can enhance an outfit just by their color.  However, that day, I also bought 2 fashion scarves that coordinated with them as well.  And together, they biuld a brand new look.  These scarves can be worn around the neck, draped across the shoulders, hanging gently on the arms, and even around the waist.
Another fabulous fact is that these scarves that would normally go for 15 to 20 bucks in some stores, were only 5.99$ at this discount store.
I know there's a saying that "you get what you pay for" but these items don't have any scars or damage to them, they're just cheap.  And I'd say that's no problem at all.
Furthermore, there's no better way to prepare for the northeast spring time chill.  A little extra protection around your neck can save you from a cold or sore throat. (At least in my experience)  And it provides just enough warm to keep you from dragging around a jacket during unpredictable weather changes.

      FASHION SCARVES:  1) they're light weight cozy-comfort
                                             2) a fashionable necessity
                                             3) and an easy way to upgrade your look

(later on I'll show how I work with these items to maximize their fashion potential)

Shoe shopping drama

Yesterday I went shoe shopping.  I knew I would find some great deals because I went to a store that takes merchandise from other stores that are going out of business,  or that just have out-of-season merchandise to get rid of.  I went expecting to walk out fully pleased.
At first, I walked through the shoe Isles with a certain image or color in mind that I wanted.  When I didn't find that, I almost got disappointed.  However, a pair of hot pink high heels got my attention and I soon realized that there were many more of that brand and make in other colors as well.  The best part about it was that they were only 10.00 dollars.  Soon after, my shopping cart had gotten quite full.  I had at least eight pairs of shoes, including some higher priced fancy shoes that were almost 3x the price of the others.  Even though they all said size 9 and 1/2 I made it my policy long ago to never buy anything I haven't tried on.  This time I began the process mainly to see if each color complimented me.  I tried on the hot pink shoes and to my disappointment they didn't fit, yet they were my size.  I tried blue and then green with one disappointment after the other.  Why bother trying the golden bronze pair?  But to my surprise, the bronze colored high heels fit.  Two out of three of the fancy high-priced shoes fit as well.
I decided to go back and look to see if they had more of these shoes in a bigger size.  I looked at the size tens and the green pair was there.  And then I turned back again to the 9 and 1/2 and thought perhaps a wide width would fit.  And to my relief, they did.  Even after all that, I thought about sacraficing my feet in discomfort to keep the pink shoes but decided that my health was more important.
Now, I had three pairs of shoes that were genuine leather and inexpensive and two pairs of shoes that were gorgeous and 3x as much, and, I had no where to ware them and no clothes to match them.   I thought to myself, "perhaps I should get the ones that I love the most.  After all they looked great on my feet and complimented me very well.  But then I came to my senses and decided that 3 pairs of genuine leather high heels that I could dress up or dress down and enjoy everyday is certainly the smarter way to shop.  Let's get real, how many gorgeous pairs of shoes are just collecting dust in our closets ?

         So, F.Y.I., when shopping for shoes;
                          1)  find a discount department store if possible
                          2)  keep your eyes out for unexpected surprises
                          3)  never buy what you don't try
                          4)  don't sacrafice your health for material things
                          5)  be smart, empty your cart of anything your not going to use

And a special thanks to the "Building 19 dept. store" for meeting my needs one more time.

Mother of 5 Mistaken for 15

Recently, I had an experience at my job that started me thinking about what I really wanted to pursue in life.  I wandered what would happen if I took the very things I love and do as a hobby, and pursued them as a career?  These thoughts led to some drastic changes that have lead me to a new adventure in the career of fashion consulting.

I've always loved fashion.  I find myself giving fashion tips to the customers at my job, in kindness, of course.  I run a fashion show and auction for a non-profit organization as a means to raise money, and I help people shop for great clothes on a meager budget.  I find fashion a form of art that expresses the inner being in ways that words somehow dampen or even restrict.  In fashion their are no real limits.  I find myself displaying different styles all the time.  Though this video below isn't to promote any fabulous fashion, it will give you a closer look at the author of "Fab Your Image 4 Less".

Thank you for watching .
